Diary of an English Major’s Journey in Coding.
Hi and hello! Welcome to my first ever blog! Here I will be doing my best to talk about my journey in learning how to code. What you can look forward to in this blog is my thoughts and feelings about learning to code. Be prepared for a lot of frustration and potentially ranting!
A little about myself, I am 29 years old (at the time of writing this) and currently live in Atlanta Georgia. I have lived all over the place and visited many countries. I am also not actually American. My parents are Brazilian and German and I was born in Brazil. Shortly after I was born, we moved to Frankfurt, Germany where we stayed for a few years before we moved to the U.S.A.
Most of my education too place in the states and I was studying English for my bachelors. However, due to some life circumstances I was actually never able to finish. Not long after I had to stop, I ended up finding myself in a ministry school in Northern California and stayed there for about four years. After my time in California I went back to live with my family.
After thinking a lot about what I want to do with my life, I decided to pursue coding. I’ve done a lot of odd jobs throughout my life but I never felt like anything that would really stick. I recently got involved in a DnD (Dungeons and Dragons) community and they use a VTT (Virtual Table Top) called MapTool. MapTool is a program that is based in JavaScript and it is a more-or-less blank slate. MapTool can be as simple or complex as you want it to be.
This is how my interest in coding started. In order to have a good experience with MapTool you need to have some familiarity with how to make macros. After spending sometime and learning from other members of the community, I had gotten pretty good at making macros for the tokens we play with in the app. So much so I had some friends come to me and ask me if I could make and update their tokens for them.
It was from this that I decided to wholeheartedly pursue coding as a profession. Though what I’ve learned from my time with MapTool is extremely small and limited in the grand scheme of things. However, I am looking forward to learning new things and to actually start knowing what I am doing (to some extent).
